Tony starts out in his blue and black racing suit on the Iron Man 2 track. This standard Mark V Suit Up figure lets you attach the red and silver armor in stages, with joints in the chest, shoulders, back and calves to capture the plates folding into place.
MMS599 · Standard Edition
Leave part of the racing suit visible beneath the armor and use the scraped-up Tony portrait to show where he is in the transformation. When the forearm pieces are on, battery-powered lights pick out the arc reactor and repulsors.
The racing suit has its own gloved hands for fists, a relaxed stance and a suitcase grip. Once the mechanical hands are in place, you can pose the fingers individually.
Two similarly named Mark V Suit Up editions appear on Sideshow. MMS599 is the racing-suited Tony with attachable armor. MMS600 is the Deluxe release that adds the articulated red-and-silver suitcase and its assembly pieces.
Visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs described how many attempts it took to make Iron Man 2’s portable armor unfold convincingly. Every plate that ended up over Tony’s shoulders and chest had to look as though it had started somewhere inside that little case. That’s the part of the sequence the Suit Up figure can capture particularly well. The red outer armor stops at different points, leaving the blue coveralls and black shoes visible below the pieces that have already locked into place.
Pick the moment before you pick the hands. Early in the transformation, the racing gloves still make sense. Further along, the mechanical hands give you the individual finger joints and the lights in the palms. Extra pieces for the chest, waist, back and forearms let you emphasize one side or stage of the transformation. If your favorite shot is the open case at Tony’s feet with machinery coming out of it, that specific prop is the distinction to look for when comparing this set with Deluxe MMS600.
To see a Mark VII that leaves the mechanics permanently in view, our Exo-Chrome Iron Man review takes a close look at its clear red panels.
To compare Tony halfway into the suitcase suit with a complete armored figure, take a look at the diecast Mark XLIII 2.0.
