The Monaco racing suit stays visible as Tony puts on the Mark V armor in Iron Man 2. This Deluxe edition includes the red-and-silver articulated suitcase and the extra assembly pieces that attach to it.
MMS600 · Deluxe Version
Exclusive to Deluxe Version.
The chest, back, shoulders and calves have moving armor sections, so you can stop the suit-up partway through. Leave the helmet off to keep the damaged Robert Downey Jr. sculpt in view above the racing suit.
Iron Man 2 visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs described the suitcase deployment as one of the hardest moments to make believable. The armor had to look as though it could fit inside something Tony could carry. On the Deluxe figure you can display that problem in miniature: the red-and-silver case opens on the track, and a separate set of mechanical pieces shows it starting to unfold around Tony’s feet.
The Monaco racing suit still shows between the metal-colored pieces. It’s worth looking at the back before you position Tony in front of the track graphic. The chest, shoulders, upper arms, back and calves have articulated armor components. A separate arrangement changes the appearance of the chest, waist, forearms and back. Don’t expect those parts to work like a scaled-down movie mechanism that assembles itself. Hot Toys’ instruction sheet breaks the display into assemblies you fit by hand.
For a photo, the most useful bit of blue might be right at the shoulders. Keep the arms far enough apart for that racing fabric to show through and the eye reads this as clothing becoming armor, rather than a finished suit leaning over a case. Lower the viewpoint to bring the open case and Tony’s shoes into the same frame. The hard red edges around his feet then lead up into the same red plates starting to close over his chest.
The extra opening suitcase and the parts that show the Mark V starting to assemble from it distinguish MMS600. The regular MMS599 still puts Tony in the racing suit with armor deploying across his body. If a listing only shows the helmet and chest plates, those features alone won’t settle which one it is. Look for the case and the separate assembly pieces in the photo.
Tony’s suit-up armor shows the mechanism by opening the plates. The Mark VII Exo-Chrome review shows a different solution, with the machinery visible through the shell.
