A Closer Look at STAP

Hot Toys designed the STAP to display with its separately sold Mandalorian figure. The STAP box includes the vehicle and base; Din Djarin is sold separately.

The STAP predates this film appearance. Trade Federation battle droids used the craft for reconnaissance and patrol, and it later served the Separatist Alliance. Its narrow shape and repulsorlift propulsion suit a small scout vehicle rather than a transport carrying a whole squad.

That history makes the design recognizable even with a different rider. The central upright body, paired machinery and open platform preserve the outline familiar from the prequel era. The worn finish gives this release its own appearance without needing to redesign the vehicle from scratch.

An open craft also keeps the rider part of the collectible. There is no roof or cockpit wall hiding most of the figure, so the helmet, arms and feet remain visible around the controls. Collectors who enjoy the character as much as the vehicle can appreciate both in the same arrangement.

The supplied raised base represents the hover rather than a stretch of road. That is a useful distinction from a conventional motorcycle model: the vehicle’s identity depends on looking suspended. The turbines and weathered panels provide the mechanical detail, while the gap underneath is what sells the flight. A clean view of that gap can be more effective than surrounding the STAP with a large amount of unrelated scenery.

A scout vehicle rather than a small starfighter

The STAP's full name is unusually literal: one trooper rides an aerial platform. Lucasfilm identifies it as a repulsorlift craft with two blaster cannons. That places it closer to a patrol vehicle than a miniature version of a spacecraft with a sealed cockpit. The rider's exposed position is a defining feature, not a missing body panel.

That distinction is helpful when reading its action scenes. The vehicle can move above the ground and carry weapons without becoming a spacegoing fighter. A backdrop of terrain or an installation suggests its patrol role more directly than placing it against a star field. The small platform and handlebars also make the rider's stance important to the overall shape.

For collectors of Star Wars vehicles, the STAP offers a different relationship between machine and operator from a closed cockpit. A TIE fighter or X-wing can be appreciated mainly as a vehicle model; a STAP with a rider leaves the character visible. That is a good reason to consider the figure and machine together before buying, even when the products are sold separately. Their colors, costume and intended appearance will be seen in the same small scene.

The separately sold Mandalorian is the supported pairing identified for this release. The craft's older association with battle droids does not prove that every sixth-scale droid can grip these controls or reach the foot supports. A collector planning a different rider needs an actual compatibility check, rather than using the shared scale label as proof. That is particularly important here because there is no seat to conceal a mismatch in arm or leg reach.

Hot Toys STAP is expected at US retailers in April–September 2027.

Buying from Hot Toys or Secret Base in Hong Kong usually means getting the vehicle around 6–8 weeks before US retailers. Overseas shipping accounts for that gap, but the timing varies by shipment.
