A Closer Look at Supergirl & Krypto

The bright blue suit, red skirt and S-shield establish the superhero look. The music player, sunglasses and coat bring out the everyday side of Kara without a second portrait or a full costume change.

Krypto has his own little wired cape and walks alongside Kara. Lobo adds another character from the film, with chains, a spiked vest and a very different attitude.

Kara remembers Krypton in a way Clark does not. She grew up with its people and culture before losing them, while he grew up on Earth. DC's discussion of the film makes that difference central to Milly Alcock's Supergirl. The shared chest emblem does not mean the two characters should have the same personality.

The film takes inspiration from Tom King and Bilquis Evely's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Its journey through space gives Kara room to be angry, funny and uncertain as well as powerful. That background helps explain why ordinary personal belongings can feel right with the superhero costume rather than looking like unrelated bonus pieces.

Krypto is part of that more personal picture. The pair can read as a young woman with her dog before the capes remind you what they can do. For a DC collection built mainly around formal standing superheroes, that is a distinct reason to choose this set. It offers Kara's companionship and personality alongside the recognizable Supergirl colors.

The story behind Kara's traveling companion

Woman of Tomorrow gives Ruthye an important role in how we understand Kara. DC's discussion of the comic emphasizes the young companion's perspective: she is trying to understand the hero she has asked for help. That makes the book more than a series of fights with Supergirl in the middle. It is also a story about what someone else sees in her when she is tired, angry or reluctant.

That is useful reading alongside a film-based collectible, provided the two are kept distinct. Bilquis Evely's drawn Kara and Milly Alcock's screen Kara are separate interpretations. The comic supplies background for the journey and its themes; it does not establish the exact shape of a film costume, an actor's face or the contents of a Hot Toys box. A comic panel and a film still answer different collecting questions.

DC also published a work-in-progress edition showing Evely's original art for the first issue. For collectors interested in how an appearance develops, that offers a different reference from finished, colored panels. It lets you study the artist's line and expression before comparing the screen adaptation. The point is to see what each medium contributes, rather than expecting the figure to reproduce every version of Kara at once.

Krypto brings the focus back to this particular set. He gives Kara someone to react to without requiring a second human portrait. A small turn toward the dog can suggest a pause in the journey; facing both forward makes them look ready to continue it. Neither requires treating the dog as an accessory she has to hold. Keeping that relationship readable is a good reason to choose the pair even if your DC collection has no other characters from the film.
